Medieval Grudziądz, classified as a ‘small town’ (approximately 2000 inhabitants) has not yet been the source of particular interest among researchers investigating the educational life of the Prussians. However, it is worth mentioning that the beneficial geographical location of the town on the Vistula trail and the proximity of the Komtur’s castle added to the increase in the economic potential of its inhabitants and in the need of qualified workers. Although the sources are imperfect, researchers managed to find 72 (73) students coming from Grudziądz who received education at foreign universities. In this respect, the town is number eight in Prussia (after Gdańsk, Kaliningrad, Toruń, Elbląg, Malbork and Braniewo), and number two in the Chełmno region, after Toruń. The first known student from Grudziądz studied Canon Law in Avignon in the middle of the 14th century, but others preferred Prague (4), Vienna (14), Leipzig (20) and Cracow (35), and only some chose Cologne, Rostock, Wittenberg and Bologna. Few could afford to change the university or to receive a university degree. Only five got a Master’s degree, and fifteen became Bachelors of Arts (most of them graduated from the Cracow university: three Masters and eight Bachelors), while only four residents of Grudziadz studies Law as well. Most of them returned to Prussia and applied for such posts as prebendaries, writers, notaries or teachers. Obviously, the members of affluent families and sons of the gentry stood the greatest chance of employment. They most frequently became members of Prussian chapters or parsons in their hometowns. Others had to accept less prestigious positions or looked for better opportunities outside Grudziądz, for example Piotr of Grudziądz (1392– ca. 1452), a composer who became a parson in a Kashubian village Białogarda near Lębork.
