In the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite, Aphrodite is disguised as a mortal maiden when she visits Anchises in a hut on a mountain. Anchises makes a welcoming greeting in which he lists several names of goddesses to ask for the identity of the stranger: Artemis, Leto, Aphrodite, Themis, Athena, the Graces and the Nymphs. The purpose of this paper is to consider this greeting, and especially the list of the goddesses. The poet made the greeting based on the scene of Odysseus and Nausicaa in the Odyssey, and used the ring composition to bind the greeting with other parts of this hymn. When the poet described the goddesses and ordered them, he was very careful to follow the epic tradition to construct the greeting in a manner that is simultaneously innovative and deeply traditional.
