The Lateran Council that began 5th October 649, is an answer to the crisis caused by the question of monothelitism. The reason behind the Council was the events that had marked the beginning and attempts to introduce a new teaching on Christ. The doctrine of monothelitism aimed at a close contact between Catholics and monophysitists. The then theological debate no longer focuses on the two natures within Christ, but on His will and energy. The Constantinopole patriarch Serge taught that Christ had only one will. Acting together with the then emperor, the patriarch led many monophysitists to the unity with the Church. It was done to strengthen the unity of the Empire against Muslims’ invasions.
