THE HISTORY AND TOPOGRAPHY OF SUOMENLINNA
Języki publikacji
Abstrakty
The rehabilitation of a seaside fortress of Suomenlinna (Sveaborg in Swedish) is now one of the biggest conservation undertakings in Finland. For centuries Finland was a province of the Kingdom of Sweden. The forcing out of the Swedes and the invasion of Finland by Russia was one of the most dramatic periods in the history of the country. Most probably it is for that reason that a fortress built by the Swedes, a witness of those events, is considered by the Finns as a monument of their own history. The history of Suomenlinna began in 1747, when the Swedish Parliament decided to build a seaside fortress near Helsinki. Its task was to stop Russian expansion deep into Finland. A powerful seaside fortress comprising the port, dockyard and garrison town was built under direction of Augustyn Ehrensvard, with great expenditure of labour and material. It was situated on several rocky islets, in an archipelago of skerries near Helsinki. A gradual weakening of Sweden went along with a continuous strengthening of Russia’s might. Power ambitions of the two rivals brought about numerous conflicts and an inescable victory of the stronger could not by stopped by constructing even the biggest fortress. In 1808 Russia finally annexed Finland. The fortress of Sveaborg, regarded as unconquered, surrended also. Helsinki, situated in its vicinity, became the capital of a new province of the empire. After Finland had regained its independence the fortress of Sveaborg got renamed into Suomenlinna and it was used by the army until 1978. Plans for the rehabilitation of Suomenlinna islands worked out in the seventies are aimed at transforming them into a cultural and recreational centre.
