HEBRAICA IN THE MSS. BIOGRAPHICAL LEXICONS OF THE SCHOLARS OF THE CZECH LANDS FROM THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY
Języki publikacji
Abstrakty
This short note calls attention to manuscript biographical lexicons composed by Czech and Moravian scholars at the end of the 18th century who incorporated Jewish authors into their works focused on the Czech lands. Most biographical data derive from the work Bibliotheca Hebraea (1715–1733) written by German theologian and bibliographer J. Ch. Wolf, who drew mainly on information found on title pages of Hebrew prints, in the Rabbis’ approbations or in an occasional introductory material by authors or editors when composing his short entries. The biograms have uniform structure with a Hebrew name of the author and his patronymic accompanied by its Latin translation in the lemma. These data were borrowed by the Czech scholars without changes; however, distorted forms of names or patronymics, changed word order in the Latin translation of titles or typos occur very often.
