The issue of Russian colonialism in Ukrainian thought. Political dependency, identity and economic development
Języki publikacji
Abstrakty
The author examines the history of the idea that Ukrainian lands were Russian colonies. He notes that the thinkers focused on political and economic aspects, and that those like Dontsov, who examined the cultural aspects of Russian domination, never used the term “colonialism” to refer to it. The idea that Ukrainian lands were colonies figured prominantly in historical writing during the 1920s, but was otherwise marginal to Ukrainian thought. He concludes with a summary of arguments for and against Russian colonialism and suggests Ukraine should be compared with countries like Ireland, Korea, and Algeria.
