W artykule autorka podejmuje problem społecznej roli współczesnej edukacji oraz znaczenia humanistyki i kształcenia humanistycznego. Czyni to w kontekście analizy i komentarzy do poglądów Marthy C. Nussbaum zawartych głównie w jej pracy Not for Profit. Why Democracy Needs the Humanities. Tekst prezentuje interpretację pedagogicznego manifestu, jakim jest Not for Profit i analizuje problem „etycznego pouczenia”, roli literatury w kształceniu oraz etycznego wymiaru narracyjności. Krytycznie komentuje wybrane wątki współczesnych polskich debat na temat miejsca i znaczenia humanistyki w kształceniu ogólnym.

In the article Socratic questioning, narrative imagination and world citizenship I focus on the problem of social role of contemporary education and the meaning of the humanities and the humanistic education. I address these issues in the context of the analysis and comments to Martha C. Nussbaum’s book Not for Profit. Why Democracy Needs the Humanities. I present my interpretation of the pedagogical manifesto of this book and also consider the problem of “ethical instruction”, the role of literature in education and ethical dimensions of narrative. In addition, I critically comment on selected topics of contemporary Polish debates on the place and importance of the humanities in general education.
