At present Poland has 14 ateliers, 4 of which are in Warsaw, 3 in Cracow, 2 in Łodź and 1 in Poznań, Wrocław, Łańcut and Zakopane. They employ altogether 81 persons. All ateliers suffer from a shortage of highly skilled personnel; only 9 ateliers are run by workers with higher education. Also, premises of many of them are far from being satisfactory with regard to the needs; merely three ateliers are well adapted for the execution of specialistic work. The main shortage of many of the ateliers is too small area, lack of good day-light, lack of separate rooms suitable for washing. There is also not enough specialistic equipment. Only 4 ateliers are capable to carry out chemical studies and analyses. The provisioning of ateliers with basic articles and raw materials made in Poland is good, but it often difficult to get necessary imported materials. Still, despite general difficult conditions many ateliers can boast fine conservation attainments, which unfortunately does not often find its reflection in publications. The most difficult problem for all ateliers of textile conservation is regular training of workers. The author of this article proposes to reactivate a specialized department (existing in 1967—70) that would be attached to the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łodź. Another proposal is to bring to life the Main Centre for the Conservation of Textiles at the Central Textile Museum in Łodź, and then to open it the foolowing sections: — Young Conservators' Training Section — Bibliographic and Publishing Section — Section of Chemical Research Work — Scientific and Training Section and finally — Material Purchasing Section. In the situation when on the one hand there is a big number of structures that call for an immediate intervention of the conservator, and on the other hand there is not enough well-trained specialists, it is necessary to take up decisions aimed at a radical improvement of the present condition.
