Festivities of the liturgical year and their music shown on the example of the Minorites and Clarissan nuns in Český Krumlov monasteries during the second quarter of the 18th century

The period between 1726 and 1750 when the Minorite Monasteries in Český Krumlov were administered by superior Hyacint Sperl is remarkable for very-well preserved sources which are deposited in the regional archive in Třeboň. Since the monastery was used by both the Minorites and the Clarissan nuns, the archives enable us to also find a lot of information about the liturgical life of the nuns. Both monks and nuns celebrated festivities of the liturgical year that were obligatory for the entire Roman Catholic Church, as well as specific festivities of the order with a special officium (Saint Francis, Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Porziuncola, Saint Clare) reflecting the Franciscan spirituality. Detailed information about the course of the festive days in the monasteries including musical accompaniment can be found in the chronicle of the monasteries entitled Liber magistralis, as well as in Direktorium [Directories] and Kniha ceremonií [Book of Ceremonies]. As was typical for the Minorites of that period, the art of music was generously developed and studied and beautiful music produced in the monasteries in Český Krumlov attracted large numbers of believers to the local festivities, including Prince Schwarzenberg.
