Religious tourism and pilgrimages belong to the oldest forms of tourism. Goethe’s frequently cited remark says that pilgrimage trails to the Saint Jacob’s Tomb have shaped the European continent. These words are of major importance in the age of secularization and tendencies aiming to belittle the significance of religion in Europe. However, despite so many threats to faith and pilgrimages, the pilgrim movement is reviving. It results from several determining factors which are very complex and often subject to changes. Sanctuaries and numerous places that are holy not only for Christians but also for other religions’ followers constitute a significant developmental factor for many European regions. Ancient, traditional holy sites are often used to promote regions and places as cultural trails. They are sometimes followed by devout pilgrims and sometimes by tourists for research purposes. It happens that the route changes or transforms the tourists’ hearts and they become pilgrims. Thus, the regions develop economically and the participants of tourist and pilgrim movement – spiritually.
