PERSUASIVE MEANS IN RELIGIOUS PERIODICALS AS A RESULT OF THE TRANSLATOR’S STRATEGY

Abstrakty
The author depicts the history as well as the characteristics of the Jehovah’s Witnesses; makes an analysis of passages from periodicals Straznica Zwiastujaca Krolestwo Jehowy / The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom oraz Przebudzcie sie! / Awake! (translations and originals) which reveals differences between the English version and the Polish one. The differences result from the dominant translation strategy which takes the persuasion function of the religious message as the main criterion in the process of translation. The consequence of the translator’s choice is the growth of the text’s influence on the receivers. The distinction of the basic means of persuasion, their division and discrepancy enable showing the importance of the translator’s decision, which is based among other things on sometimes different structure of metaphors in these two languages.
