In the year 2009 in Spišské Podhradie (site Stredný hon I) there was examined the section of the burial-place of the Košťany culture. More than 247 graves were uncovered which number is the largest of the above mentioned culture. Paper focuses on graves with inventories that constitute the oldest part of the burial-place. Earrings in the shape of a willow leaf (represented in the number of 10–11) are indication of the early stage. Ceramics in the graves are unique. Furnished graves are frequently equipped with beads made of bone, antler, beads of faience, as well as flint arrowheads. In inhumation burials skeleton are placed in a squatting position with a different orientation by sex (men on the right, women on the left side) that is consistent with practice in the Mierzanowice culture. Depending on the size and location by the skeleton copper ornaments in the shape of a willow leaf may serve mainly as earrings or headdress. They were long-term used, so is not a criterion for dating. Their occurrence in eastern Slovakia are evidence of infiltration of small groups of the population from Malopolska. Closer contacts with the Malopolska are visible in the further development of the Mierzanowice culture, especially in the Samborzec group.
