The article presents and discuss the results of representative surveys on readership conducted in Poland since 1972 (with special attention paid to the years 2000-2010). Reading of books and its intensity is analysed within the scope of the socio-economic profile of respondents (age, education, occupational status, rural vs. urban inhabitants, income) as well as its consistency with other reading practices (text and press reading, books’ purchase, internet activities and interests). Higher propensity to reading books display females, students and school pupils, young and well educated inhabitants of large cities or urban professionals enjoying high economic status. The unlike book readers occurs among seniors, retirees, peasants, long-lasting unemployed and unskilled manual workers as internalised habit of reading tends to replicate social stratification and inequalities in distribution of social capital. The decline in declarations of reading books that has been observed since 2006 is juxtaposed to cultural changes accelerated with the digitalisation and proliferation of Internet and cable TV among Polish households. Some needs that formerly were fulfilled by reading books currently can be meet by digital and social media while some types of content formerly available only through printed books migrated to cyberspace inflicting on the structure and preferences of the nowadays readers.
