This paper is meant to help the viewer to think out of the box and get an idea of the usage of small wind turbines as an alternative method to generate electricity. Starting with the basics of small wind turbines, such as the usual design and the size classification. Via the current barriers concerning the installation of small wind turbines regarding the personal site. To new knowledge regarding a running research project with the title "Small Wind Turbines in Rural and Urban Environment", which handles the site optimization of small wind turbines taking the roof type and its orientation into account. The results of this research project are based on Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations in order to observe the influence of a building's roof on the local wind conditions and thus on the small wind turbine's energy yield.
