The idea of designing and constructing a high performance PW-8 has flourished among a group of last-year students, who have decided to make their diploma projects in this field. The PW-8 project has emerged from the ULS (Ultra-Light Sailplane) project, which has been realised at Warsaw University of Technology since 1978. For students, the ULS project has been providing an opportunity to get in touch with a real engineering activity comprising conceptual and preliminary design, design of structure, design of manufacturing process, construction, flight and ground tests, and gathering operational experience during the period of studying. As a result of that activity five gliders and one motorglider have been designed, constructed and successfully tested. Three of them; PW-2 "Gapa" PW-5 "Smyk" and PW-6 gliders have obtained the type certificate. According to the FAI sport code the micro-light designs are classified into the following three categories: o aircraft, the maximum weight of which should not exceed 450 kg (for two-seater) or 300 kg (for one-seate) and while the stalling speed should not exceed 65 kph; o powered hang gliders; o powered paragliders or paraplanes;
