The problem how to monitor ships' movement on the Gdansk Bay arises during the investigation of air pollution emitted by internal combustion engines in Gdansk agglomeration. In the maritime navigation some dedicated monitoring and control systems have been known for many years. Additionally, it is possible to apply some other systems, specially configured for the experiment. In the paper different solutions are discussed and some results of application of such systems for the recognition of main propulsion system's characteristics are presented.
