The article discusses the application of discrete-event simulation methodology to study the decision problems in health care systems. The general outline of discrete simulation model of urban emergency medical system (EMS) is presented and the results of selected experiments are described. The issue of emergency system's complexity and its impact on the management decision processes are addressed. The possibility of using the method to study the inequalities in access to emergency services based on evidence from Polish Southwest region is discussed.
