Recirculating combustion is an attractive approach to combustion of gases. It can increase its thermal efficiency and reduce harmful emissions. The paper systematises recirculating combustion regimes by using two characterisation parameters, i.e. [delta]T COMBUSTION and [delta]T RECIRCULATION. Within the proposed comparative framework the boundaries between four practical recirculating combustion regimes, i.e. mild, HICOT, feedback and catalytic combustion are identified. Typical bifurcation behaviours of recirculating processes are presented. Recent advances in recirculating combustion are discussed. Practical examples of recirculating combustion systems are introduced.
