The author presents some results of statistic evaluation of usability of the optical radiation for the knock detection in a gasoline engine - as a preliminary stage of further signal analysis. Research was done using modified one-cylinder SI test engine. The source of the signal was resultant wide-band intensity of optical radiation gathered using optical combustion sensor with direct access to the combustion chamber. The optical signal was then transmitted by a waveguide bundle to the set of photodetectors and after conversion - recorded using analog-digital card. Data analysis has shown good correlation between indicated pressure treated as a reference signal and signal of intensity of optical radiation. Optical signal was also more sensitive to the changing conditions of engine operation. Therefore wide-band intensity of optical radiation can be a good source of information regarding onset and intensity of knock in a gasoline engine. However further processing will require more advanced analysis like band-pass filtering and transformation into frequency domain.
