The article presents a historical frame of surface engineering development against the background of maintenance engineering development. The areas of surface engineering activities are presented and surface engineering is characterised at present and in the fiture. The convergence of activities carried out by surface engineering with activities of maintenance engineering are analysed in the areas of manufacturing, constructing, research and maintenance of surface layers.
