Damage to vehicles and tracks/roads is a seroius technical, scientific and economical problem. In this paper we study the effect that the surface of rails in curves becomes wavy, i.e., material is erased in a periodic pattern from the inner rail. In order to study the generation of such slip waves we simulate the motion of a single wheelset on a curved track. We allow for anisotropic friction and elasticity of the axle. In the relevant speed range, we obtain self excited oscillations, leading to periodic frictional power dissipation along the track, which in turn may be viewed as the cause for the observed form of rail damage.
