Abstrakty
In modern vehicles (or machines, in general) wear processes are typically very slow and thus difficult and expensive to study experimentally. Simulations of dynamical systems which change their geometrical configuration in time are hence necessary. The evolution of wear surfaces is commonly governed by a simple abrasion law. We generalise this law by assigning internal variables to the particles of the contact area. The latter represent in a phenomenological way properties like surface texture, smoothness, residuaal stresses etc., and they are responsible for the speed of abrasion. We show how to obtain reliable numerical results for models including wear components of this type, and discuss the influence of the introduced constitutive functions. In particular, we study several algorithms for coupling models of short-time dynamical behaviour with abrasion models and develop an approximation technique on adaptive meshes. We apply our algorithm to study feedback between surface evolution and short-time dynamics.
