EN

Attempts were undertaken to modify bentonite using silane coupling agents. The modification aimed at altering the original hydrophilic bentonite character toward a hydrophobic one. The best effect was obtained using n-octyl-triethoxysilane, as confirmed by physicochemical tests, e.g. by testing sedimentation rate in xylene. The modification decreased the average diameter of particles in most of samples but polydispersity of the particles remained at the same level. Electron micrographs of the raw bentonite demonstrated typical "blooming rose" patterns in the raw bentonite surface which was deformed following modification with silanes.
