The Podhale Region is located in southern Poland, within the Inner Carpathians. Its area amounts to about 1000 km2, with a population of about 150 000. In the south it borders Slovakia - through the Tatras, the only mountains of Alpine character in Poland (the highest peak, Rysy, is 2499 m a.s.l.). The central part of Podhale is occupied by the Podhale Basin and the Pieniny Klippen Belt. In the north are located the Orawa-Nowy Targ Depression and the Gorce Mountains (Turbacz peak, 1310 m a.s.l.).
