The paper dials with the results of plain strain compression test of austenitic steel on GLEEBLE test machine. In order to obtain true strain-stress curves the results was corrected in accordance with experiment conditions. For normal constant strain rate the local strain rate in the slip line field varies for different initial specimen geometries. Therefore, the understanding of real stress-strain dependence needs to take such effects into account. Moreover, the variations in strain and strain rate within the test-piece cleary have a significant influence on the evolution of microstructure. To analyze the local strain rate distribution futures and its influence on flow stress level, the finite element simulation of the process was made. The association of strain and strain rate characteristics within the test-piece with the results of metallographic analysis is also presented in this study.
