Abstrakty
The main objective of this paper is to explain the role of activators in silicon carbide sintering. On the basis of dihedral angle measuremets in model systems the authors postulate rejection of the S. Prochazka hypothesis saying that boron and carbon modify the grain-boundary and surface energy. Evolution of microstructure observed on model sinters and the data available in the literature enabled kinetic explanation of the role of activators. Accordingly, carbon function is to lower the pressures of thermal decomposition products and to hinder the mass transport processes ineffective in sintering while boron function is to activate bulk and grain-boundary diffusion.
