Nowoczesne miasta nierzadko opisuje się jako bezduszne. Nawet jeżeli się z tym zgodzimy, pozostaje pytanie: w jaki sposób może narodzić się dusza miasta i duch architektury? Niniejszy artykuł sugeruje, że odpowiedź leży po części w potraktowaniu formy. Omawia on kwestię organizacji formy w przyrodzie i architekturze zwierząt. Reguły organizacji w świecie przyrody, które pokrywają się z zasadami organizacji percepcji ludzkiej, w znakomity sposób przybliżył gestaltyzm. Ich podstawowe wytyczne to zrównoważenie oraz jednoczesne pogodzenie przeciwieństw. W artykule tym przytacza opinie krytyków z różnych dyscyplin. W zakończeniu mówi się, że umiejętnie stosowane zasady tworzą ducha kontekstów architektonicznych i urbanistycznych.

Modern Cities are often said to lack soul. Even if we all agree about this we are left with the question; how is soul given to a city and how is spirit introduced into architecture? This paper suggests that part of the answer lies in the way that form is handled. Opening up this issue, the paper looks at the organisation of form in nature and in animal architecture. The organising rules used in the natural world are found to be co-terminal with the organising principles of human perception. The Gestalt school did much to explain these rules. Balance and the simultaneous reconciliation of opposites is central to these principles. The paper highlights how critics from differing disciplines have testified to this truth and finishes by suggesting that the principles when applied with care, simultaneously introduces spirit into architectural and urban contexts.
