Abstrakty
We review the research results concerning the effect of current concentration on the transition of the solid armature of railguns in hybrid-plasma armature. In the first part of the paper we summarise a theory that explains analytically the effect of the motion of the armature on the distribution of the current in the rails and in the armature, the so-called "velocity skin effect". In the second part we present the three-dimensional integral approach that we have used to predict the performance of the launch package. This numerical approach takes into account the mechanical, thermal and magnetic balance, and the phase transitions from solid to liquid and from liquid to vapour. The melt-front progression and the velocity, when the solid armature becomes a plasma, predicted by this approach, has been confirmedby experimental verifications.
