Can war techniques decide on the war lots? It is one of the basic elements necessary to reach success and victory, but not the only one. Also an effective command, the knowledge of military operations principles worked out in the past wars, is necessary. Let us look at the role of military operations history, that examines these rules, through the eyes of the most distinguished military historians and theoreticians. Thus we reach the main topic of the article: how the use of military history is demonstrated. Basing on the example of Józef Piłsudski, the importance of military history to create a commander’s personality has been discussed. Various examples of the way of actions, that the history of wars provides, have been presented. Frederick II, Napoleon, Clausewitz, Moltke senior and marshal Foch wrote about it.
