Post-traumatic Stress and Limiting Its Effects

Abstrakty
Although one faces various stresses every day, one usually copes with emotional tensions caused by them. If the strength or contents of stressful feelings exceeds ordinary human experience, adaptation mechanisms that have worked so far are not satisfactory. Apart from natural reactions to stress, it is possible to appear characteristic disorders (PTSD) which significantly handicap or even make normal social functioning impossible. The article discusses basic diagnostic criteria of post-traumatic reactions and disorders and also methods to counteract the effects of extreme stress applied in many armies. Reconstructing and experiencing again a traumatical situation in secure conditions appears to be an effective way to ease the effects of trauma. The technique called Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD), discussed by the authors, which is applied as quickly as possible after the extreme stressful incidents serves this purpose. This technique is commonly used to soldiers performing their tasks in peace missions. General principles of probable further treatment of potential stress victims have been discussed basing on Bundeswehre’s medical services experiences.
