Internal conflicts in Algeria : historical approach and modem times

The article presents political history of Algeria from the times of the French occupation in 1830 up to the present times. The author highlights the causes and course of the Maghreb states’ (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia) conquest and defines the French colonial system on the occupied territory. Next he describes the process of shaping the successive stages of Algerians’ fight for independence, starting from Abd al Kadir’s uprising to the war for independence in 1954-1962. According to the author, the means and methods of fighting applied by France against the insurgents were not right because using the tool of brutal terror made the further hatred and will of reprisal accumulate. General Charles de Gaulle’s strategy, who decided to grant sovereignty to Algeria for the sake of the good of the future of France, appeared right in the long run. Freedom, however, did not change Algeria into the state of immediate welfare and stability. In the 90s, a bloody internal conflict broke out between the secular authorities and groups of Islamic fundamentalists. The death toll of the civil war is over one hundred thousand victims. The international community should support peace initiatives in Algeria because this country’s stability will affect in a positive way the whole Mediterranean region and will improve the European Union’s security.
