Heat exchangers fouling during coal and biomass co-firing - development and application of a horizontal deposition probe for lab-scale tests

Although for co-firing of (limited percentage of) woody biomass much knowledge already exists on the extent of the above-mentioned problems in the existing PF and CFB systems, little is known on effects of high co-firing percentages of more troublesome biomass types. Especially, it is unclear what the repercussions are under the conditions of new, advanced technologies, such as oxy-fuel combustion or boilers with Ultra Super Critical (USC) steam conditions. Since full- or even pilot-scale trials are potentially very costly and time-consuming, and therefore scarce, lab-scale tests seem to be a very attractive option to investigate initially these problems (for instance, primary fuels selection). In this paper the horizontal deposition probe for slagging and fouling investigations, recently developed at Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) is presented. The results of fouling experiments under co-combustion of coal and biomass at the flue gas/steam conditions representative for superheaters in a PF boiler are given and discussed. The said tests confirmed that the developed probe is a very useful tool for characterisation of the slagging/fouling propensities of fuels under the conditions of power boilers.
