Environmental enrichment and animal welfare at zoological gardens

Abstrakty
This paper is a short review of problems related to animal welfare in zoological gardens. Sources of stress in zoos and the main types of abnormal behaviour were identified. The role of environmental enrichment as a way to improve animal behaviour in zoos was emphasized. The definition, classifications and function of enrichment were presented. The author also referred to an example of an enrichment experiment in which he had participated.
