Celem pracy była próba usunięcia zewnętrznego zanieczyszczenia włosów parami rtęci. W trakcie eksperymentu zastosowano różne techniki odmywania rtęci z powierzchni włosów.

Hair is often used to assess environmental and occupational exposure to different metals. It has been recognised as a valuable material in the assessment of exposure to methylmercury, especially when absorbed in certain foodstuffs, particularly fish. However, in the case of mercury vapour, the interpretation of results may be difficult due to external surface contamination. When incorporated into the keratine structure of hair, mercury does not undergo any transformation nor does it participate in body metabolism. The aim of this study was to remove the external contamination of the hair exposed to mercury vapour. Different washing procedures for removing mercury from the surface of the hair were examined. It has been found that mercury cannot be removed by washing with water, acetone and detergent. To some extent only, mercury is removable by washing with 20% solution of nitric acid, and to somewhat higher extent by washing with 8% solution of hydrochloric acid.
