The aim of the present paper is to give a brief overview of the old and current hypotheses on the origin of the agentive postposition '-ne' in Hindi and its dialects. The problem has remained unsolved and the opinions among Indian and Western scholars regarding it differ considerably. The present author attempts to show the possible source of the '-ne' postposition taking into consideration its vast array of functions in selected varieties of Hindi. The material has been selected from different sources - vernacular grammars, texts and the author's own field notes.
