The article presents the main results of geoarchaeological research, including the use of satellite remote sensing, carried out in the territory (chora) of the Greek city of Nymphaion (Strait of Kerch, Ukraine). After summarising the main historic events connected with the chora, the authors stress the determining nature of its strategic position on the Kerch Strait, including the singular nature of its geographic environment, both past and present. Geodynamic factors and agents (winds, currents, the sedimentary dynamics of spits, etc.) are also analysed. The question of the geographical boundaries of the chora is then dealt with, bearing in mind the geological and structural framework, the physiography (continental and underwater) and the regularisation of the coastline (erosion and accretion). After analysing the geomorphological evolution (especially the closing off and the in-filling of the lagoons) and the hydrographic conditions, the authors submit a hypothesis as to the location of the port of Nymphaion. Remote sensing data, obtained by treating SPOT imagery, were correlated with other data: geographical (e.g. topography, bathymetry, hydrography, infrastructures), historical (old Tartar tracks) and archaeological (sites located in the course of prospecting the chora).
