The article presents and discusses some major problems of pre-election polls, on which statistics concentrates in its search for solutions. Long experience of pollsters in Poland and abroad suggests the necessity of combining sample information with prior information about the population of interest, in order to minimize non-sampling errors. Conclusions presented in the paper are also based on the most recent Poland's experience from the Presidential election held in year 2010.
