Industrial policy of the European Economic Community, and then the UE, aimed at restructuring of enterprises in order to improve their and the whole sectors' competitiveness. Processes taking place in the sectors of iron and steel metallurgy were particularly tough. The article reviews measures undertaken by major states of the former EU (before the EU enlargement by 10 countries in May 2004).
