The exact translation from "Note on the Spelling and Pronunciation of the nmes of Pierce, by Prof. James M. Peirce of Harvard University, taken from the Genealogical Register". Jaroslav MEstek commented the pronunciation of "Peirce" in the case of Charles Santiago Sanders Peirce (1839-1914): how the vowel-sound (as long monophthong) is the same that we can hear now, on the one hand according to the General American, in the verb "purse" [pзrs], and on the other hand according to the Received Pronunciation, in the selfsame verb "purse" [pз:rs].
