Public surveys as tools of naming animals in Czech zoological gardens
Języki publikacji
Abstrakty
The article deals with the phenomenon of popular public surveys in which participants suggest suitable names for animals in zoos. The research is based on answers from the zoos themselves and from newspaper reports. From the analysis of 1,283 suggestions for the name of a polar bear and 1,153 for the name of a giraffe, it follows that female given names were most often proposed (in both official and hypocoristic forms). This blurs the distinction between anthroponyms and zoonyms. Specific animal names were motivated primarily by the look and origin of the animals.
