Functioning of the National Museum in Warsaw – High Subsidies and Low Supervision The National Museum in Warsaw was established in 1862 as the Museum of Fine Arts. Its operations are based on the decree of the 7th of May 1945 about the Museum’s nationalisation. Its main task, since it is the central museum institution of the Polish state, is to study, illustrate and popularise Polish and foreign artistic culture. In 2023, the Supreme Audit Office conducted the planned audit entitled “Functioning of the National Museum in Warsaw”, which covered the years 2019–2023 (until the end of the audit). The audit was conducted at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and at the Museum, including its four branches: the X. Dunikowski Museum of Sculpture in Królikarnia, the Museum of Poster in Wilanów, the Museum of Interiors in Otwock Wielki, and the Museum in Nieborów and Arkadia. The scope of the audit included: the performance of content related tasks by the Museum, its financial management, public funds spending, as well as the supervision of the Minister of the Museum’s activities. Irregularities were found both in the operations of the Museum and in supervision. The article presents a selection of findings.

Najwyższa Izba Kontroli przeprowadziła badanie dotyczące działalności Muzeum Narodowego (Muzeum) w Warszawie. Objęto nim Ministerstwo Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego (Ministerstwo) oraz Muzeum z czterema oddziałami: Muzeum Rzeźby im. X. Dunikowskiego w Królikarni, Muzeum Plakatu w Wilanowie, Muzeum Wnętrz w Otwocku Wielkim oraz Muzeum w Nieborowie i Arkadii. Oceniono realizację zadań merytorycznych, prowadzenie gospodarki finansowej, wydatkowanie środków publicznych, a także nadzór Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego nad działalnością Muzeum. Kontrola wykazała nieprawidłowości zarówno w funkcjonowaniu Muzeum, jak i nadzorze nad nim.
