This paper offers a fragmentary overview of the ideas about sexuality that constituted the context in which Freud developed the psychoanalytic concept of sexual drive. It highlights similarities between certain views of early sexologists and the fundamental tenets of psychoanalysis, often mistakenly considered to be in opposition to the mainstream scientia sexualis of the time. The revolutionary aspects of Freudian thought are pointed out, along with the tension between innovative ideas and the normative developmental framework that Freud introduced into his theory over time. The paper concludes with a reflection on the relevance of Freud’s early insights and their possible contribution to contemporary discussions on sexual diversity.

W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono fragmentaryczny przegląd idei dotyczących seksualności, stanowiących kontekst, w którym Freud rozwijał psychoanalityczną koncepcję popędu seksualnego. Zwrócono uwagę na podobieństwa między niektórymi poglądami wczesnych seksuologów a fundamentalnymi założeniami psychoanalizy, które często, choć błędnie, uznawano za opozycyjne wobec głównego nurtu ówczesnej scientia sexualis. Wskazano rewolucyjne aspekty myśli Freuda oraz napięcie między nowatorskimi ideami a normatywnymi ramami rozwojowymi, które z czasem Freud wprowadzał do swojej teorii. Pracę zamyka refleksja nad aktualnością wczesnych spostrzeżeń Freuda, mogących wnieść istotny wkład we współczesne dyskusje dotyczące różnorodności seksualnej.
