The first part of the paper provides an overview of the psychoanalytic notion of Nachträglichkeit, the development of the concept in Freud, and its reception within psychoanalysis. Various forms of Nachträglichkeit are presented in an attempt to systematize it. The second part of the paper deals with the contemporary state of society and takes up Alexander Kluge’s formulation, who spoke of the „stretched present” that knows no future. In the face of the current situation – the coronavirus pandemic, war, climate change – this diagnosis seems to be correct; fear in the present obscures the future and leads to a longing for a seemingly better past, a sentiment exploited by right-wing movements.

Pierwsza część artykułu prezentuje zarys psychoanalitycznej koncepcji Nachträglichkeit, rozwój tej idei u Freuda i jej recepcję w psychoanalizie. Przedstawia się tu różne formy Nachträglichkeit, próbując je usystematyzować. Druga część artykułu dotyczy współczesnego stanu społeczeństwa i podejmuje sformułowanie Alexandra Klugego, który mówił o „rozciągniętej teraźniejszości”, nieznającej tego, co przyszłe. W obliczu obecnej sytuacji – pandemii koronawirusa, wojny, zmian klimatycznych – diagnoza ta wydaje się trafna; strach w teraźniejszości przesłania przyszłość i prowadzi do tęsknoty za przeszłością, która wydaje się lepsza, co wykorzystują ruchy prawicowe.
