New York as an example of the impact of megatrends on megacities – urbanization and inequalities

Aim: The purpose of this paper is to study relationships between two megatrends: accelerating urbanization and widening socio-income inequalities in megacities, based on the example of New York in 2018-2023. Methodology: Research methods used to create this article include literature analysis, logical analysis, construction method, and case study. Results: The study identifies that inequalities in megacities arise as a result of three different urbanization processes: migration, industrialization, and the development of urban infrastructure. Implications and recommendations: The article presents recommendations for reducing social and income inequalities in megacities and proposes solutions to other urbanization-related issues, such as environmental pollution and imperfections of crisis management procedures. Originality/value: The article makes a contribution to the discussion on the effects of urbanization in megacities, offering an interdisciplinary perspective of social inequalities.

Cel: Zbadanie zależności między dwoma megatrendami: przyspieszającą urbanizacją a pogłębiającymi się nierównościami społeczno-dochodowymi w megamiastach, na przykładzie Nowego Jorku w latach 2018-2023. Metodyka: Podczas tworzenia artykułu zastosowano kilka metod badawczych: metodę analizy literatury, metodę analizy i konstrukcji logicznej oraz case study. Wyniki: Stwierdzono, że nierówności w megamiastach powstają na skutek działania trzech różnych procesów urbanizacyjnych: migracji, industrializacji oraz rozwoju infrastruktury miejskiej. Implikacje i rekomendacje: W artykule przedstawiono rekomendacje dotyczące zmniejszenia nierówności społecznych i dochodowych w megamiastach oraz ukazano przykładowe rozwiązanie innych problemów wynikających z urbanizacji, m.in. zanieczyszczenia środowiska i niedoskonałości procedur zarządzania kryzysowego. Oryginalność/wartość: Artykuł wnosi istotny wkład w dyskusję na temat skutków urbanizacji w megamiastach, oferując interdyscyplinarne spojrzenie na problem nierówności społecznych.
