Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie problematyki genezy i ewolucji funkcji i struktury funkcjonalnej miast w kontekście postępującej reorientacji dotychczasowych teorii funkcjonalnych. Z drugiej strony artykuł prezentuje, w sposób wybiórczy, dorobek geografów i historyków w zakresie genetyczno-ewolucyjnego badania funkcji miast i związanych z tym różnych poglądów spotykanych w wielu publikacjach.

The aim of the article is to present the genesis and the evolution of functional structure of the cities in the context of ongoing reorientation of the hitherto functional theories. On the other hand the article shows, in a selective manner, the work of geographers and historians in the field of genetic and evolutionary examination of the cities' function and the accompanying views represented in many publications.
