In the article, the results of tests connected with assessment of microbiological contamination of meals and air in the student cafeteria and the employee canteen of Gdynia Maritime University were presented. The test results showed a much higher degree of contamination of air with mesophilic bacteria and the fungi in the employee canteen than in the student cafeteria. The higher degree of microbiological contamination of air in the canteen could result from small area of the room, improper ventilation and significantly larger number of consumers. Furthermore, the meals served in the canteen and the cafeteria revealed the presence of forbidden pathogenic bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes. The obtained results indicate the necessity to control the hygienic condition of raw materials and the personnel employed in these rooms.
