Purpose: the main purpose of this paper is to define the scope in which the entrepreneurial discovery process for smart specialization affects the technological development of the region. Design/methodology/approach: Based on theoretical analysis of the concept of smart specialization and entrepreneurial discovery process (EDP), set of research tools and methods has been proposed, including broad participation and interaction between EDP participants. The research tool – questionnaire for studying the needs of entrepreneurs in the direction of technological development of the Silesian Voivodeship consisted of four thematic blocks, including such aspects, as: innovative activity, financial aspects and the effectiveness of obtaining funds, cooperation and development strategy. A representative group of 300 companies was selected to participate in the survey. The responses obtained were processed and generalized using statistical methods – with use of MS Excel and Statistica software. The results of the research, conducted in 2017-2019, were used as a tool to identify areas of technological and cooperation advantage in the Silesian Voivodeship and recommendations for the update of Regional Technological Program for the 2030 perspective. Findings: The role of different groups of actors is varies substantially in terms of their involvement and impact, with the stakeholders from business and research are the main group to be targeted in the entrepreneurial discovery process. Research limitations/implications: The results provide a basis to improve the effectiveness of regional development planning, especially solutions for SME involvement and cooperation. The results confirm, that a detailed study of entrepreneurs' needs should be included as the main instrument for the implementation and for gaining reliable information on the effectiveness of implemented solutions in the field of innovation support. Limitations of the study include the subjectivity of respondents' opinions and the relatively small research sample, which may limit the generalization of the results. Practical implications: The results of the survey indicate the existence in Silesian region of the distance between entrepreneurs and scientists (thinkers and doers), which may result in lessening of effectiveness and willingness of cooperation, without preventive measures on a regional scale. The results also confirmed, the existence of financial barriers for innovativeness activities, especially impeded access to external capital, translating into lost benefits. Originality/value: The contribution of the research to the development of innovation management process in the region, which is based on a broad process of collaboration with different stakeholder groups. The results provide a contribution to the operationalization of the entrepreneurial discovery process.

Purpose: authors based on trends, goals, theses and examples of good practices presented in the article focus – both in theoretical and practical dimensions – on striving to identify need to develop eco-innovation as an element strengthening environmental policy in global, regional and national dimension. Design/methodology/approach: theses presented in the article have been verified using the following methods: literature review, critical literature analysis, document and comparative analysis, and examples of good practice. Findings: innovations in the field of ecology focus in particular on human activities in two areas. The first is use of existing living and inanimate natural resources resulting from need to maintain life expectancy. In the second area, focus on its protection and care for its duration. Therefore, it should be emphasized that associating innovations with them is extremely important in modern ecology. Striving to create new eco-friendly solutions of an eco-innovative nature both in the sphere of its social acceptance and in utilitarian dimension. Originality/value: the article enriches, and at the same time develops, knowledge and discussion in the field of defining eco-innovations – and their impact on the lives of communities and individuals. Thanks to knowledge presented in the article, the need to look for solutions that can strengthen the impact of eco-innovation on the natural environment is clearly justified.

Purpose: the main objective of the article is to support building sustainable development of spa towns by protecting their unique resources. Design/methodology: the theses presented in the article were verified using: critical analysis of literature, document analysis, descriptive statistical analysis. Findings: on the basis of the article it can be concluded that demographic change is an important challenge for numerous areas of public policy, such as family, health care, labour market, social security, education and active leisure. The identified challenges and areas of their impact are part of a broader spectrum of reflection that should focus on a holistic approach to active policies, which are a key determinant of human capital – in which, as forecasts indicate, by 2050 people over sixty-five years of age may constitute 20% of the total population of Europe. Originality: the article enriches knowledge and develops discussion on demographic changes and the resulting great contemporary challenge for environment, institutions and people creating the future of the studied areas, which may turn out to be maintaining the professional activity of the ageing population while building modern active social and labour market policies – corresponding to the economic structure of the studied areas.

W Polsce, zgodnie z obowiązującymi wymaganiami prawnymi, szyb likwiduje się przez jego wypełnienie materiałem odpowiednio dobranym do warunków geologicznych, z uwzględnieniem czynników decydujących o bezpieczeństwie. Przy doborze materiałów do likwidacji szybu należy również brać pod uwagę ich wpływ na środowisko naturalne. W publikacji przedstawiono wyniki badań laboratoryjnych wymywalności substancji rozpuszczalnych z materiałów stosowanych do likwidacji szybów górniczych. Badanie wymywalności substancji rozpuszczalnych materiałów zasypowych przeprowadzono z zastosowaniem wody destylowanej oraz wody dołowej. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że wymywalność substancji rozpuszczalnych, zawartych w badanych materiałach z wodą dołową wykazują, że duże zasolenie wód może mieć wpływ na agresywne rozpuszczanie i wymywanie związków chemicznych, co powoduje zanieczyszczenie wód podziemnych.

In Poland, in accordance with the applicable legal requirements, the shaft is dismantled by filling it with material selected for the geological conditions, taking into account the factors determining safety. When selecting materials used in liquidating mining shafts, one should also take into account their impact on the natural environment. The publication presents the results of laboratory tests on the leachability of soluble substances from materials used in liquidating mining shafts. The test of leachability of soluble substances was carried out with the use of distilled water and mine water. The conducted research showed that the leachability of soluble substances contained in the tested materials with mine water shows that high salinity of mine waters can have an aggressive dissolution and leaching of chemical compounds, which can cause groundwater contamination.

Purpose: The aim of the paper is to identify and assess the various factors – legal, technological or social, that determine the process of eco-innovation development in SMEs sector companies. Design/methodology/approach: The first part of this paper presents literature considerations on eco-innovation and its characteristics as well as types of determinants affecting its implementation. The occurrence and importance of particular determinants for the implementation of eco-innovation was then evaluated as a result of an own survey research carried out in 2020 on a sample of 96 SMEs implementing technologies for environmental protection from the Silesian Voivodeship. Findings: The analysis and the obtained results indicate a significant positive influence of managerial environmental awareness, slightly less significant impact of final consumers and communication style in the company and significant impact of legal regulations, which may be a barrier for eco-innovation implementation. Research limitations/implications: The results provide a basis for activities to improve the effectiveness of the implementation of eco-innovation in enterprises. Limitations of the study include the subjectivity of respondents' opinions and the relatively small research sample, which may limit the generalization of the results. Purpose: The aim of the article is to present a conceptual model for the assessment of competitive advantage of the region referring to smart specialization. Design/methodology/approach: For the purpose of developing the model, a literature review of the competitive advantage was conducted. Then the main statistical indicators necessary to assess the competitiveness of the region were selected. These indicators included data on economy, research and patents. Indicator data are a source of information for experts to conclude on the competitive advantage of the region and areas of potential specialisation. Pilot studies for the developed model were carried out in the Silesia Voivodeship. Findings: The main result of the work was to develop a model for assessing the competitiveness of the region in the context of smart specialisations. The model based on statistical data and expert opinions and is a useful tool for selecting and updating specialization. Research limitations/implications: It was noted that relying only on statistical data to assess a region's level of competitiveness is not sufficient, as these are provided with some delay. In addition, these data usually represent a high level of aggregation. Practical implications: The developed model finds practical application in the process of identifying and updating smart regional specialisations. It can be used by local governments to build a regional innovation policy. Social implications: Intelligent specialisations are key components of regional development. They influence economic, social and environmental aspects. The use of the model in the Silesian Voivodeship has made it possible to distinguish a new smart specialisation which is green economy. Originality/value The article contribute to realization of the entrepreneurial discovery process in the regions, which is, according to the guidelines of the European Commission, the main component of the innovation development policy.

This paper presents the possibilities of waste management originating from municipal wastewater treatment through the production of mineral-organic fertilizers based on sewage sludge. The original method created for this purpose was used in the study together with the environmental assessment of this method. Therefore, the purpose of this publication is twofold. On the one hand, the first goal of the paper is to draw attention to the need to choose the appropriate method of utilization of sewage sludge, taking into account its characteristics and potentially harmful effects on the environment. The second goal of the paper is to assess the environmental impact of the selected method and demonstrate its eco-innovation. The first part of the paper is a theoretical introduction to the issues of sewage sludge management, as well as theoretical considerations on the essence of eco-innovation. The second part of the paper presents practical issues of production and application of the organo-mineral granulated fertilizer subjected to research, while the third part – the methodology of the applied Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), including in particular the application of Material and Energy Flow Analysis (MEFA) at the Life Cycle Inventory stage. The fourth section presents the assumptions and results of the conducted research for four alternative solutions for the production of organic-mineral fertilizers. The fifth and final part summarizes the results and contains a number of conclusions and recommendations that should be considered in the context of the possibilities of further product optimization.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono możliwości użytkowego wykorzystania odpadów z oczyszczania ścieków komunalnych, poprzez wytwarzanie nawozów mineralno-organicznych na bazie osadów ściekowych autorską metodą oraz ocenę środowiskową tej metody. Tak więc, cel niniejszej publikacji jest dwojaki. Z jednej strony, pierwszym celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na konieczność doboru odpowiedniej metody utylizacji osadów ściekowych z uwzględnieniem ich charakterystyki oraz potencjalnie szkodliwego oddziaływania na środowisko. Drugim celem artykuły jest ocena wpływu środowiskowego wybranej metody, celem wykazanie jej eko-innowacyjności. Pierwsza część pracy stanowi wprowadzenie teoretyczne do problematyki zagospodarowania osadów ściekowych, jak również teoretyczne rozważania nad istotą eko-innowacyjności. Druga część pracy przedstawia praktyczne zagadnienia produkcji i zastosowania organo-mineral granulated fertilizer poddanego badaniom, podczas gdy trzecia – metodykę zastosowanej analizy cyklu życia LCA, w tym szczególnie zastosowania analizy Material and Energy Flow Analysis (MEFA) na etapie Life Cycle Inventory. Czwarta sekcja przedstawia założenia i wyniki prowadzonego badania dla czterech alternatywnych rozwiązań technologii produkcji nawozów organiczno-mineralnych. Część piąta i ostatnia podsumowuje wyniki i zawiera szereg wniosków i zaleceń, które należy rozważyć w kontekście możliwości dalszej optymalizacji produktu.

Content available remote Cylindrical flow regulators with core hole - chamber diameter effect

The standard and modified liquid flow regulators were tested in this work. In modified regulators a cylindrical core hole was installed in the regulator axis. It takes the shape of a cylinder, without a base being tangent to the wall of the regulator. It is placed on the wall opposite to the outlet. The „core-hole" effect in the outflow or water from the tank contributes to the stabilization of the outflow, however, for the tested devices, a slight increase in the discharge coefficient was observed, which is undesirable in this case. It should be noted that this increase is small and should not be assessed unequivocally negatively, because stabilization of the core and even outflow of liquid are also important. It has been shown that the value of the discharge coefficient decreases with increasing diameter of the swirl chamber. The research with the participation of cylindrical vortex regulators containing a core hole, which is the subject of this article, is to be an extension of the existing knowledge on this phenomenon.

W pracy przebadano standardowe i zmodyfikowane regulatory przepływu cieczy. W regulatorach zmodyfikowanych w osi rozpylacza zainstalowano cylindryczny otwór ślepy (ang. core-hole). Przyjmuje on kształt walca, pozbawionego podstawy, będącej styczną ze ścianą regulatora. Umieszcza się go na ściance przeciwległej do otworu wylotowego. Efekt „core-hole" w odpływie wody ze zbiornika przyczynia się do ustabilizowania wypływu, jednak dla przebadanych urządzeń zaobserwowano nieznaczny wzrost współczynnika wypływu, co jest w tym przypadku niepożądane. Należy zaznaczyć, że wzrost ten jest niewielki i nie należy go oceniać jednoznacznie negatywnie, gdyż ustabilizowanie rdzenia i równomierny wypływ cieczy są również istotne. Wykazano, że wartość współczynnika wypływu maleje ze wzrostem średnicy komory wirowej. Badania z udziałem wirowych regulatorów cylindrycznych zawierających otwór ślepy, które są tematem tej pracy, mogą być rozszerzeniem dotychczasowej wiedzy dotyczącej tego zjawiska.

It is widely known and accepted that the global climate is changing with unprecedented speed. Climate models project increasing temperatures and changes in precipitation regimes which will alter the frequency, magnitude, and geographic distribution of climate-related hazards including flood, drought and heat waves. In the mining industry, climate change impacts are an area of research around the world, mostly in relation to the mining industry in Australia and Canada, where mining policies and mitigation actions based on the results of this research were adopted and applied. In Poland, there is still a lack of research on how climate change, and especially extreme weather events, impacts mining activity. This impact may be of particular importance in Poland, where the mining industry is in the process of intensive transition. The paper presents an overview of hazardous events in mining in Poland that were related to extreme weather phenomena. The needs and recommended actions in the scope of mitigating the impact of future climate change on mining in all stages of its functioning were also indicated. The presented analyses and conclusions are the results of the first activities in the TEXMIN project: The impact of extreme weather events on mining activities, identifying the most important factors resulting from climate change impact on mining.

This paper discusses design, evaluation, and application for the use of swirl/vortex technologies as liquid purification system. A study was performed using modified swirl sedimentation tanks. The vortex separators containing baffle have been studied under laboratory conditions at hydraulic load from 21 to 64 [m3/(m2·h)]. Analyzed disperser phases were municipal water and glycerol solutions of varying concentration. The pressure drop and the efficiency of purification of liquid stream were analyzed. The suspended particles of different diameters were successfully removed from liquid with the application of swirl chambers of proposed constructions. It was found that damming of liquid in the tank increases alongside liquid stream at the inlet and depends on the tank construction. The efficiency of the sedimentation tanks increases alongside the diameters of solid particles and decrease in the liquid flow rate. The best construction proved to be the one where baffle is located in the middle of in- and outlet due to the highest efficiency of the purification liquid stream for solid particles of the smallest diameter. The proposed solution is an alternative to the constructions of heavy fraction separators.

W artykule opisano standardy dotyczące odprowadzania wód opadowych do środowiska, omówiono uregulowania prawne oraz zwrócono uwagę na kwestie ekonomiczne dotyczące tego zagadnienia. Skupiono się na określeniu wartości maksymalnych stężeń zanieczyszczeń występujących w wodach opadowych oraz warunków, jakie muszą być spełnione przy doborze separatorów. Odniesiono się też do innowacyjnych rozwiązań, przede wszystkim w kwestii konstrukcji separatorów oraz do badań prowadzonych nad zwiększeniem sprawności redukcji zanieczyszczeń w hydroseparatorach w porównaniu do rozwiązań komercyjnych.

The article describes the standards for rainwater discharge to the environment, we discussed the legislation and paid attention to economic issues. Focused on defining the maximum concentration values of the most important contaminants present in the runoff water and the conditions which must be satisfied in the selection of the separators. Reference was also innovative solutions primarily in terms of design and separators for research on improving the efficiency of pollution reduction in hydroseparatorach, compared to commercial solutions.
