Purpose: The study explores how the disruption caused by Covid-19 has influenced the innovativeness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Poland. It aims to show the examples of innovative ideas introduced by SMEs in times of pandemic to overcome the obstacles that appeared due to fluctuations in the demand and supply because of Covid-19. Design/methodology/approach: The study draws on a qualitative research design and uses case studies. We chose three small and two medium-sized Polish firms specializing in different business areas for analysis. Findings: The analysed organizations due to Covid-19 introduced innovations mainly focused on IT solutions. All of the firms have begun to offer remote work. Moreover, they implemented a new work organization system and a new customer service system. In all cases, the new solutions will be maintained and developed after the end of the pandemic. Research limitations/implications: The study uses five case studies. Practical implications: The outcomes of the study can motivate entrepreneurs to implement innovations as the case studies may inspire them. Moreover, the successes of presented SMEs may convince entrepreneurs that introducing innovations is not difficult and that the effects of innovative changes are measurable and visible in a short time. Thus, they may be encouraged to take action to overcome obstacles in their surroundings. Originality/value: The study develops the knowledge concerning the innovation process in companies in an uncertain, unstable and unpredictable environment.

Purpose: This study evaluates the acceptance of GPS/GPRS-based telematics technology in freight road transport companies registered in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: The evaluation is based on a survey of 500 representative road transport companies carried out in 2020. The Technology Acceptance Model was estimated, and its results were checked for robustness. The scope of the information collected in telematics systems is defined in terms of its perceived utility and perceived ease of use at the operational management level. The latent factors affecting technology use are defined and implemented. Findings: Most respondents (80%) claimed that telematics systems had a considerable influence on the effectiveness and efficiency of the whole company's operation. It contributed to a higher number of orders executed per time unit, more effective use of the driver's working time, and increased the entrepreneurs' trust in the company. The companies employing more workers recognize the higher usefulness of telematics systems and are motivated to use the technology more widely than smaller enterprises. TAMs estimated separately for small and medium-sized enterprises did not significantly differ among the parameter estimates. Research limitations/implications: The Technology Acceptance Model is a useful analytical tool for evaluating telematics technology acceptance by the road transport sector. The study is based on a random sample of enterprises observed once in 2020. It is recommended to monitor them in two or three waves to compare the dynamics of the telematics usage process. It is planned to continue the study in that direction. Practical implications: The outcomes are valuable in practice twofold. Firstly, the extension of telematics systems use is interesting for final users, i.e., road transport companies that will find scope for their application. Secondly, the results are helpful for system providers who get knowledge on telematics perception from enterprise management. Originality/value: Although widely applied to other IT systems, the TAM model has not been used to evaluate the use of telematics in road transport companies. The paper justifies TAM's categories at the operational management level in road transport enterprises, contributing to understanding managers' behavioral aspects of decision-making.

The main aim of the paper is to study the impact of the level of digitization of business activities on the human resources orientation on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach: During the research process, a survey was conducted among 140 SMEs in Poland at the beginning of 2020. The multiple regression model was built to find the link between the variables. Findings: Statistical analysis indicated that digitization did not have a clearly positive impact on employees’ orientation towards SCP. Among the analysed variables, negatively correlated relationships appeared, especially in the area of the digitization of contacts with the customers. Research limitations: As limitations, it can be pointed the managerial approach during survey research, limited research group, as well as the study period excluding pandemic time. Originality/value: The novelty of the research manifests itself in in the fact that the research problem was applied to the small and medium-sized enterprises, instead of to corporations.

The aim of the paper is to present the concept of the small entrepreneur’s credit mentality, which was introduced, grounded, empirically verified and popularized in Polish literature by T. Łuczka, and to indicate its role in the development of research on entrepreneurship and SME sector companies. This aim was achieved through a literature review, with particular emphasis on studies and research projects inspired by the concept of a small entrepreneur’s credit mentality. The analysis shows that this concept is very useful for describing and interpreting the financial management activities of SMEs and certain economic phenomena (e.g. market demand for bank credit). Moreover, it constitutes a significant inspiration for other authors to conduct further in-depth research in the area of entrepreneurship and small business management. The main directions of this inspiration were identified as: 1) considerations in the field of identification, description and interpretation of the specificity of SMEs, 2) studies in the field of the influence of psycho-personal characteristics of entrepreneurs and behavioral and cultural factors on entrepreneurship and small business management, 3) analyses concerning barriers to the activity and development of SMEs, as well as 4) works on the causes, conditions, course and effects of the presence of this specific attitude in various types of small economic entities. The literature review indicates that in the future we may expect further scientific considerations and the opening of new research areas inspired by T. Łuczka’s concept of the small entrepreneur’s credit mentality.

Purpose: The aim of this article is an attempt to prove the hypothesis, that one of the key obstacles for growth of Polish SMEs is a lack of management succession, understood as the employment of a professional management team and/or allowing for an external investor. Design/methodology/approach: In this article the authors used external studies, industry reports and data published by domestic and international statistical offices and financial institutions. In order to draw conclusions, the authors used the comparative analysis of available statistical data and case studies of five Polish companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Findings: Findings include: 1. characteristics of the SME sector and its importance for the Polish economy, 2. explaining the role of management succession in the growth of the company and identifying barriers to this process, 3. indicating relationship between size/success of the company and presence of professional management and corporate governance, 4. presenting the impact of institutional environment on management succession, 5. showing the relationship between success of selected Polish companies and their management succession model. Research limitations/implications: The space of management succession in Polish companies has never been a subject to any comprehensive research neither in the theoretical, nor in statistical dimension. To better understand the actual scope, forms, limitations and effects of the succession, the authors made an empirical research based on a representative sample of 200 Polish SMEs. Findings from this research will be published in a separate paper. Practical implications: The authors see the practical effects of sharing the results of this research mainly in the possibility of changing the skeptical behavior of Polish entrepreneurs towards management succession. Originality/value: The originality of the article results from the multifaceted approach to the research problem, which has no equivalent in the domestic literature. It is important for management practitioners and for setting directions for further research.

Purpose: The aim of the paper is to identify and assess the various factors – legal, technological or social, that determine the process of eco-innovation development in SMEs sector companies. Design/methodology/approach: The first part of this paper presents literature considerations on eco-innovation and its characteristics as well as types of determinants affecting its implementation. The occurrence and importance of particular determinants for the implementation of eco-innovation was then evaluated as a result of an own survey research carried out in 2020 on a sample of 96 SMEs implementing technologies for environmental protection from the Silesian Voivodeship. Findings: The analysis and the obtained results indicate a significant positive influence of managerial environmental awareness, slightly less significant impact of final consumers and communication style in the company and significant impact of legal regulations, which may be a barrier for eco-innovation implementation. Research limitations/implications: The results provide a basis for activities to improve the effectiveness of the implementation of eco-innovation in enterprises. Limitations of the study include the subjectivity of respondents' opinions and the relatively small research sample, which may limit the generalization of the results. Practical implications: The results provide a basis for activities to improve the effectiveness of the implementation of eco-innovation in enterprises. Limitations of the study include the subjectivity of respondents' opinions and the relatively small research sample, which may limit the generalization of the results. Originality/value: The contribution of the research to the development of management sciences mainly includes the formulation and empirical verification of a set of key factors determining the process of eco-innovation implementation in SMEs in post-industrial region.

The aim of the paper is to identify and evaluate the indications of general digitization in SMEs and determine the critical factors of SME digitization at the present time while focusing on the management of small and medium-sized enterprises. The structure of the sample is based on a distributed questionnaire. The verdicts confirming or rejecting hypotheses were based on research questions, formulated hypotheses, and statistical evaluations using MS Excel and R-Commander software, and these statements were further supported by the decision on validity or invalidity of a hypothesis in the whole population. Research has shown that although there is a strong linear relationship between the growth of digitization and the importance of digitization for enterprises, the current requirements for digitization of human resources management activities in SMEs are higher than businesses are able to implement in practice, so the digitization in SMEs is lagging behind. The main reason is that small businesses do not generate sufficient financial returns to invest in comprehensive restructuring of enterprise systems and structures, thus digitizing most of their departments. Another reason is the smaller number of employees in those businesses where digitization as such would not pay off now. However, SMEs often follow the path of partial digitization, especially in human resources management which is supported by the fact that SMEs very often implement at least a basic human resources management information system, namely this system is used in more than 60% of SMEs.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) drivers are the key factors in successful SCM strategy implementation. SMEs with limited resources need to focus on the top drivers to improve performance and competitiveness. The paper explores which driver factors have the largest importance according to the opinion of the top managers of SMEs. Two developing countries were compared which have different supply chain environments mainly due to their geographical structure. Information from top managers of 105 Hungarian and 124 Indonesian SMEs was collected using an online questionnaire. The data was analysed using statistical methods. This study is the first to rank SCM drivers in a quantitative study comparing SMEs in different supply chain environments. The findings reveal that from 22 driver factors both countries perceive the same top 10, however in a different ranking order. Improvement of customer satisfaction and information dissemination are the top two drivers, which are highly correlated.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are fundamental to the economy of all countries, representing the majority, with a considerable contribution to GDP, as well as generating jobs; for this reason, it must seek to remain in the market. The objective is to analyze the impact of training on the organizational performance of SMEs in northwestern Mexico, applying the statistical technique of structural equations model (SEM-PLS); the research was conducted to 195, considering the commercial, industrial and services, is a quantitative study, descriptive, correlational, causal, using the statistical technique of structural equations with the SMART PLS 3.3.2 software, and not experimental cross-sectional. The alternative hypothesis is accepted, since training has an effect on the organizational performance of SMEs in northwestern Mexico. It is highly significant because there is very strong evidence of the causality of the mediating variable training on the organizational performance of SMEs with 99.9% reliability. Training has the greatest effect on organizational performance because each unit that increases training will have an effect of +0.453, being the variable with the greatest cause-effect impact on organizational performance in SMEs in northwestern Mexico.

Although Lean has been known and applied in both theoretical and practical on around the world for many years, a deeper understanding of Lean tools, principles implementation, and a roadmap to successfully apply is needed. In the context of Small and medium enterprises (SME), it is very difficult for local enterprises to apply synchronization Lean tools, techniques, and principles because of limited resources in manpower, technology, and management capability. Through the case-based study, this paper proposed the four-phase roadmap for Lean application in SMEs. An analysis of methods from a literature review of Lean implementation was conducted in order to identify the phases of the roadmap. Then, six SMEs in Vietnam that applied Lean were chosen to collect data and analyze the applicability and how Lean tools are successful implemented in the cases to confirm the findings.

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to identify and evaluate the benefits of existing solutions in the field of Industry 4.0 in automotive companies in the sector of small and medium enterprises. Design/methodology/approach: The author applied the literature review to extract the main elements of Industry 4.0, which are adopted in the automotive industry. The next part was an interview with managers of a selected automotive company. The interview was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Findings: Based on the assessment of implementing Industry 4.0 solutions in an enterprise from the SME sector, it can be concluded that a company may achieve many benefits thanks to such elements as automated machines, cyber-physical systems, big data and cloud-based tools. The results of these studies have shown that the efficient use of technology can significantly increase the productivity of a production company. Research limitations/implications: Industry 4.0 is developed intensively, but is still at an early stage of implementation. The research was based on a case study, which limits the generalization of results. In the future, the scope of research should be extended to the entire industry. Practical implications: Managers should analyze and use the innovative solutions that Industry 4.0 gives to achieve benefits in various areas of the company’s operations. Despite this, some activities in the production process are performed better by a human than a machine or an IT system. Originality/value: The article is one of a few that examine the implementation of Industry 4.0 solutions in the context of SMEs in Poland.

Purpose: The aim of the research was to determine the cultural attitudes conducive to CSR implementation in an enterprise, and then to verify their occurrence in enterprises implementing CSR. Methodology: The research used the diagnostic survey method. The research tool used by the Authors of the article was a questionnaire allowing the verification of the occurrence of 12 cultural attitudes conducive to CSR in the surveyed enterprises. The research covered 234 enterprises on the territory of Poland, which declared CSR activities. Findings: As a result of the research, all the cultural attitudes were verified and their occurrence was assessed with a medium and low intensity, most often these are attitudes describing managers than employees. Cultural attitudes conducive to the implementation of CSR, although they are noticeable in the researched enterprises, to a small extent, support the implementation of CSR activities. Research limitations: Conducting research in enterprises outside the territory of Poland and comparing it with national ones could significantly increase the scientific value of the article. Practical implications: Research brings new knowledge and can be used by management in their practical activities. Social implications: The results of the research increase the level of knowledge on the issue of cultural attitudes conducive to CSR implementation in enterprises. Originality: The authors identified cultural attitudes conducive to the implementation of CSR in the enterprise, verified their occurrence in the surveyed enterprises and assessed whether the cultural attitudes verified by them are conducive to the implementation of CSR activities in the enterprise.

Purpose: The aim of the study has been to identify factors being a barrier to the implementation of strategic management in small and medium-sized enterprises. Design/methodology/approach: The basic sources of the information analysed are: the results of the survey questionnaire, in-depth interview and expert review. Findings: Based on the research performed in the northern part of Poland, it can be argued that in transport enterprises of the SME sector, there are only single elements of strategic management the entrepreneurs are often not aware of. Research limitations/implications: In the future, it is suggested to perform similar research on the presented topics. However, these tests should be done on the example of another industry. In 2020, it is planned to carry out research among enterprises in the printing industry. Practical implications: The SMEs owners should keep on searching for the sources of the emerging barriers to strategic management application and make attempts at applying such instruments which will facilitate eliminating or reducing those barriers considerably. Originality/value: A response to breaking the barriers not allowing for the implementation of strategic thinking in SMEs is also adapting the right IT tool, which is possible with a specific ERP class system function.
