Dnia 16 kwietnia 2019 roku został zrealizowany pomysł, który zrodził się dwa lata temu. Po raz pierwszy na Wydziale Elektrotechniki, Elektroniki, Informatyki i Automatyki (WEEIA) Politechniki Łódzkiej odbyła się konferencja zastosowań matematyki MathUp. Studenci drugiego i trzeciego roku prezentowali studentom pierwszego roku do czego przydaje się matematyka. Dzięki przychylności władz wydziału konferencja miała profesjonalną oprawę z nagrodą główną (Pucharem Dziekana) i przerwami kawowymi dla uczestników. Aula była wypełniona do ostatniego miejsca. Nieocenioną pomocą w organizacji Konferencji okazały się e-technologie.

On April 16th 2019, an idea that had sprouted in our heads for a long time was realized. For the first time at the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering of the Lodz University of Technology, the mathematics applications Conference MathUp was held. Students of the second and third year presented to students of the first year what mathematics is useful for. Thanks to the favor of the faculty, the Conference had a professional setting with the main prize (Dean's Cup) and coffee breaks for the participants. The lecture hall was full. The Conference was attended by the faculty authorities, over 200 students, over 20 speakers, over a dozen or so organizers. Almost 100 participants completed the survey, 82% thought that the presentations were interesting, illustrating the applications of mathematics well, only for 5% of the application of mathematics did not become more interesting. This shows that events promoting maths have meaning and an event organized by students for students can be successful.

We deal with a functional equation of the form ƒ(x + y) = F(ƒ(x), ƒ(y)) (so called addition formula) assuming that the given binary operation F is associative but its domain is not connected. The aim of the present paper is to discuss solutions of the equation [formula]. It turns out that this functional equation characterized an inverse proportionality type function, but if the domain of the unknown function has no neutral element. In this paper we admit fairly general structure in the domain of the unknown function.

My statement is "tangent" to the discussion of applied mathematics. I refer to the opinion of the prof. Bialynicki-Birula (2014) about the importance of teaching mathematics. I hope to learn from you about the teaching of higher mathematics non-mathematicians in your university. I see this on a big threat to the maintenance of the level and scope of mathematical research in Poland.

Coraz więcej sygnałów wskazuje, ze zmienia się stosunek społeczności matematyków do wyżej wymienionej kwestii. Do niedawna stopnie naukowe i tytuł naukowy z nauk matematycznych miały być przyznawane jedynie za twórczy wkład w rozwój tej dziedziny. Ostatnio, przy okazji jednego z postępowań o nadanie tytułu naukowego, Rada Wydziału MIM UW stanęła implicite (poprzez wynik głosowania w tym postępowaniu) na stanowisku, iż owe stopnie i tytuł należą się także za mniej liczący się wkład w nauki matematyczne, ale za to istotny wkład w inne obszary nauki, uzyskany dzięki twórczemu i niebanalnemu zastosowaniu i/lub zmodyfikowaniu znanych metod z dziedziny nauk matematycznych.

More and more signals indicates that the ratio of the community of mathematicians to the above mentioned issues. Until recently, the degrees and a degree in mathematical sciences were to be granted only for their creative contribution to the development of this field. Recently, on the occasion of one of the procedures for granting the academic title, the Council of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, University of Warsaw stood implicitly (by the outcome of the vote in the proceedings) the view that these steps and title are also less considerate contribution to the mathematical sciences, but as an important contribution to other areas of science, obtained by creatively and original use and / or modify the known methods of the mathematical sciences.

One must not soften the criteria during the evaluation of the works concerning applied mathematics. However, applicants for scientific degrees on the basis of such works should have the right to be evaluated by carefully selected referees which are related to applied mathematics.

”Matematyka stosowana” oznacza matematykę, której przedmiot badań ma związki z rzeczywistością pozamatematyczną (fizyczną, biologiczną, techniczną, ekonomiczną). W polskim środowisku matematycznym funkcjonuje także termin ”zastosowania matematyki”, który mimo innego semantycznego znaczenia jest synonimem pierwszego. Obie te nazwy odpowiadają jednemu terminowi angielskiemu ”applied mathematics”.

The Polish world of mathematics also operates the term ”application of mathematics” , which, despite another semantic significance is synonymous with the first . Both of these names correspond to one by English term ”applied mathematics”.

Działalność naukową można opisać podając różny zestaw cech. Do tak scharakteryzowanych aktywności można zastosować jedną z metod statystycznych pozwalających na agregacje czy klasyfikacje. Znawcy tematu wiedzą, że agregacje można prowadzić w różny sposób i na różnym poziomie wytworzonych klas zakończyć. W notatce tej spróbuję wymienić powody, które mogą stanowić podstawę do wydzielenia odrębnej grupy badań naukowych w dyscyplinę matematyka stosowana czy zastosowania matematyki odwołując się do już istniejących podziałów. To odwołanie zakłada, iż klasyfikacje działalności gospodarczej czy naukowej są konsekwencją racjonalnej procedury niekoniecznie wynikającej ze ścisłych metod statystycznych. Będzie to zatem raczej analiza jakościowa niż ilościowa oparta na intuicji wynikającej z wielu lat obserwacji instytucji edukacyjnych, prowadzących badania eksperymentalne i prace teoretyczne. W konkluzji pojawi się zachęta do zdefiniowania cech pozwalających na lepsze odróżnienie matematyki czystej od stosowanej.

Scientific activity can be described by specifying a different set of features. For so characterized the activity we can use one of the statistical methods that allow for aggregation and classification. Experts in the subject know that aggregation can be performed in different ways and at different levels of generated classes finish. In this note I'll try to mention the reasons which may give rise to separate distinct group of research in the discipline of applied mathematics or applications of mathematics referring to already existing divisions. This reference assumes that the classifications of economic activities, are the consequence of a rational scientific procedures do not necessarily resulting from the strict statistical methods. This will therefore qualitative analysis rather than quantitative supported on intuition derived from the many years of follow-educational institutions, engaged in experimental and theoretical work. In conclusion, the incentive will be to define the characteristics for better distinguish pure mathematics from applied.

Terminy „zastosowania matematyki” i „matematyka stosowana” są często używane wymiennie. Niektórzy jednak nadają im różne znaczenia. Ja wolę ten drugi termin, bo tak określa się tę dziedzinę w większości języków, w nazwach wydziałów, nazwach znanych czasopism, etc. O ile termin „zastosowania matematyki” sugeruje wykorzystanie wcześniej opracowanych metod, to termin „matematyka stosowana” wskazuje na nową jakość odróżniającą ją od matematyki teoretycznej, nazywanej również niezręczna kalka z angielskiego „matematyka czysta” — Pure and Applied Mathematics, n.p. z nazwy czasopisma Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, podobnie Journal des Mathèmatiques Pures et Appliquèes, lub Annali di Matematica Pura ed Applicata, żeby pozostać tylko przy nazwach znanych (i o dużej tradycji) czasopism.

Terms ,,the application of mathematics '' and ,,applied mathematics'' are often used interchangeably. Some people, however, give them different meanings. I prefer the latter term, because it is the name of this field in most languages, the names of departments, names of well-known magazines, etc. While the term "the application of mathematics" suggests the use of previously developed methods, the term "applied mathematics" indicates a new quality that distinguishes it from theoretical mathematics, also known as a carbon copy of the English awkward "pure mathematics" - Pure and Applied mathematics, e.g. the name of the journal Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, like the Journal des Mathèmatiques Pures et Appliquèes, Annali di Matematica Pura ed Applicata, to remain only the names of famous (and with high tradition) magazines.

Potrzeba rozwijania zastosowań matematyki spotyka się z akceptacją, zrozumieniem i życzliwym zainteresowaniem w środowisku matematyków. Świadczą o tym tworzone specjalizacje matematyka z ... lub zastosowania matematyki w ..., dopisywanie w pracach czysto matematycznych paru zdań lub nawet rozdziału o możliwych zastosowaniach uzyskanych wyników, często też referaty konferencyjne poprzedzone są wstępem omawiającym motywacje biologiczne, fizyczne czy chemiczne zajmowania się danym zagadnieniem. Organizuje się też wiele konferencji matematycznych poświęconych zastosowaniom matematyki w różnych dziedzinach nauk przyrodniczych lub ekonomicznych. Wszystko to daje fałszywy obraz bujnie rozwijających się zastosowań matematyki i ekspansji metod matematycznych w różnych dziedzinach nauk.

Evidenced are by creation of the mathematics major with ... or the mathematics in ..., adding in a purely mathematical work of a few sentences or even a chapter on the possible applications of the results, conference papers often are preceded by an introductory discussion the motivations of the biological, physical or chemical character to deal with the issue. Organized a number of conferences devoted to mathematical applications of mathematics in various fields of natural sciences or economics. All this gives a false picture of lush developing applications of mathematics and expansion of mathematical methods in various fields of science.

After an initial discussion at the Committee of Mathematics Polish Academy of Sciences (CM PAS) meeting in February 2013 concerning the status of Applied Mathematics in Poland, I had a feeling of confusion and dissatisfaction, because it seemed to me, both to define the concepts mentioned by the panelists, like, the more standing problems, there was not sufficiently clear. Taking now the voice I have in the first place to that the slightly harden the soil considerations and, perhaps naively, to simplify issues, so as to agree not only possible initial thesis, but above all to establish basic problems discussed. Furthermore, in order to give the opportunity to more easily formulate opposite those presented below views and opinions and to raise interest in this issue the person listed below will present the thesis in a provocative categorical, although I realize that such a categorical would be difficult to fully justify and adopt. I bet that you know what it is Mathematics.

W przeciągu ostatnich dwóch lat rozmawiałam z bardzo wieloma ludźmi. Jednym z podstawowych pytań dotyczących dalszego rozwoju matematyki stosowanej w Polsce jest to czy należy powołać nową dyscyplinę(y) w zakresie nauk matematycznych czy nie. Taką ewentualną nowa dyscypliną mogłaby być np. statystyka stosowana czy matematyka obliczeniowa. Zdania są podzielone. W tej notatce przekazuję moje wypowiedzi z różnego okresu tej dyskusji w kolejności chronologicznej.

In the past two years I talked to a great many people. One of the fundamental questions concerning the further development of applied mathematics in Poland is whether to appoint a new discipline (s) in the field of mathematics or not. Such a possible new discipline could be, for example. Applied statistics and mathematics calculation. Opinions are divided. The basic argument is this: ”If you summon a new discipline, it will give an impulse to the development of this kind of research in Poland. It does not bother us that maybe in the beginning only one or two departments will get permissions.” I agree with this argument except that it must appear a group of people - professionals such or other uses that his authority will ensure the quality, as well as prepare an appropriate proposal. They must be the people who really know their subject. This is the main conclusion of the discussion that took place at the Council of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Wrocław on 18 March 2014 bf I believe the same potential vote ”for” on the Committee on Mathematics is not enough - without any previous preparation exactly nothing will change. The movement is now on the wworld of applied mathematicians because all the others are generally very positive attitude.

W języku angielskim istnieje pojęcie industrial mathematics, które nie ma, jak do tej pory, dobrego odpowiednika w języku polskim. W Wielkiej Brytanii mówi się często, że dziedzina ta zajmuje się tym samym co matematyka stosowana, tylko że badania prowadzone są za pieniądze tych, którzy korzystają z zastosowań. Krótki, ale nieco bardziejf ormalny opis industrial mathematics to wykorzystanie precyzyjnego matematycznego sposobu myślenia do rozwiązywania rzeczywistych problemów firm i instytucji, poczynając od właściwego sformułowania podstawowych założeń problemu. Duży nacisk kładziony jest na podejście "niech będzie to tak proste, jak tylko możliwe, ale nie prostsze". Jak pokazuje praktyka znajdowane rozwiązania z jednej strony mają zastosowanie i wartość komercyjną, a z drugiej stanowią dobrą stymulację do dalszych badań akademickich. W tejp racy, po krótkim zarysowaniu historii matematyki stosowanej i skomentowaniu jej wybranych aspektów, opiszemy doświadczenia brytyjskie w zakresie industrial mathematics oraz pokażemy w jaki sposób można z nich w Polsce skorzystać.

The English term "industrial mathematics" has no widely accepted Polish counterpart. The British say that industrial mathematicians engage in activities similar to the ones taken up by applied mathematicians, only the research is done for money supplied by the ones who find the results useful in their job. A short, yet a little more formal definition says that the industrial mathematics is a human activity which employs precise mathematical description and reasoning in order to solve real-world problems for the benefit of companies or institutions. The emphasis is on clear definition of the problem and seeking solutions which are "as simple as possible, but not simpler". As experience shows, the solutions obtained in such process are not only valuable for their practical applicability but also stimulate research and provide platform for cooperation for researchers with different backgrounds and experience.

Praca dotyczy matematycznego modelu powstawania krwinek czerwonych, tzw. modelu Lasoty-Ważewskiej. Wykonano model równania uproszczonego Lasoty-Ważewskiej, wykorzystując pakiet programowy Matlab Simulink. Przeprowadzono szereg eksperymentów symulacyjnych, podając ich biologiczne interpretacje.

The work concernes mathematical model of arising of red blood cells called Lasota-Ważewska model. Using Matlab Simulink Lasota-Ważewska simplified equation was modelled. Many simulations were done and their biological interpretations were given.
