Cytotoxicity of 14 glove materials representing 4 natural rubber latex, 6 synthetic rubber and 4 synthetic polymeric materials was evaluated using dimethylthiazol diphenyltetrazolium (MTT), agar overlay and filter diffusion tests. Cell responses after contact with extracts of glove materials and contact with glove materials were assessed. One synthetic rubber glove (nitrile rubber) and 2 synthetic polymeric gloves (polyvinyl chloride) were non-toxic in all 3 tests, while 5 synthetic rubbers exhibited varying degrees of cytotoxicity, depending on the test. A severe cytotoxic response to both extracts of natural rubber latex materials and contact with natural rubber latex was verified in the 3 tests, indicating a need for consideration when selecting gloves, or other products, used in close skin contact.

W artykule omówiono sytuację na światowym i krajowym rynku kauczuków syntetycznych (SR). Przeanalizowane sytuację w trzech grupach SR: ogólnego przeznaczenia, specjalnych i szczególnego przeznaczenia. W przeprowadzonej analizie nie uwzględniono elastomerów termoplastycznych. Dużo uwagi poświęcono rynkowi krajowemu, omawiając szczegółowo produkcję SR w Polsce, strukturę ich zużycia oraz tendencje w eksporcie i imporcie. Obecną sytuację na światowym rynku SR można uznać za dość stabilną. Widoczna jest jednak tendencja do wzrostu cen najbardziej popularnych SR. W Polsce systematycznie rośnie produkcja i zużycie SR. Niestety asortyment produkowanych w kraju SR jest niewielki. Mimo wyraźnego wzrostu eksportu SR jest on nadal mniejszy od importu.

Position of synthetic rubbers (SR) on the world market and the Polish market was discussed. The situation of three groups of SR: general purpose rubbers, special rubbers and specialty rubbers was analysed. Thermoplastic elastomers were not taken into account. Much attention was focused on the Polish market. The production of SR in Poland, structure of their consumption and trends in exports and imports were described in details. The present position of SR on the world market can be considered as quite stable. However, a tendency to increase in price of the most popular SR is also visible. In Poland the SR production and consumption are growing systematically. Unfortunately the assortment of the Polish SR is small and in spite of much increase of their exports it is still lower than imports.
